Since July 2010 — when Gov. Pat Quinn signed into law a measure that mandates vehicles must stop for pedestrians waiting to cross or in the process of crossing at non-signaled crosswalks — the Chicago Police Department has issued 1,100 tickets to motorists who were deemed in violation.
Via Medill Reports (be sure to check out the vide0 on the article):
“More and more people appear to be yielding and stopping for pedestrians,” said Brian Steele, communications director for the Chicago Department of Transportation. “With that said, far too many motorists still aren’t obeying the law.”
According to the law, motorists face fines between $50 and $250 for each violation.
Six months of potential enforcement time and only 1,100 tickets? Maybe they all came on the same day…
