South Shore to suspend service between Gary and South Bend

South Shore weekend commuters traveling between South Bend and Gary will have to find some alternatives for a period of four weekends.

Starting at 2:30 a.m. Saturday and continuing until 3 a.m. Monday, service at the following stations will be suspended: Miller, Portage/Ogden Dunes, Dune Park, Beverly Shores, Carroll Avenue and 11th Street in Michigan City, Hudson Lake and South Bend.

Additional service suspensions are scheduled for Sept. 26 to 28, Oct. 10 to 12 and Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.

The South Shore will operate normal service between Gary’s Metro Center and Chicago.

The suspensions are need to complete an $18 million project to replace aged overhead wires between Gary and Michigan City. Failures of those wires is the leading cause of service delays on the South Shore, NICTD said in a news release.

South Shore passengers who usually board at those stations are advised to use the East Chicago station at Indianapolis Boulevard, which has the most ample parking.
